Frankel, Zacharias
(1801-75)
   German rabbi and scholar. He was born in Prague. He served as rabbi at Litomerice and Teplice and became chief rabbi of Dresden in 1836. In 1854 he became director of the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary. He founded the positivist-historical school which later influenced Conservative Judaism in the US. At the second Reform rabbinical conference at Frankfurt am Main in 1845 he protested against the gradual abolition of Hebrew in the liturgy and withdrew from the conference. He published studies of halakhic issues, the history of the oral tradition, and the methodolgy of the Mishnah and the Talmud. He also founded and edited the Monatsschrift fur Geschichte und Wissenschaft des Judentums.
